Our faculty are top thinkers in their respective research areas and are recognized by other prestigious Computer Science Departments as well as innovative industry leaders across the nation. To solidify our worldwide reputation we have chosen to focus on five key areas of research: Algorithms; Security; Robotics, Vision and Graphics; Computer Systems; and Natural Language Processing. Our labs are engaged in projects related to these five areas.
We are justifiably proud of the quality of PhD students we attract and the great successes of their research projects. As a PhD candidate you will collaborate with our faculty conducting cutting edge research and sharing in the excitement of discovery. You will also acquire strong independent research skills and begin to develop your own reputation as a research scientist.
Because the advisor/graduate relationship is the key to a successful PhD experience, all new PhD candidates are carefully matched with faculty advisors based on mutual research interests. In addition, an active PhD Committee of three is created for each PhD student to give cogent advice throughout your degree program. The Graduate Program Chair is responsible for assuring each PhD student is progressing through the program.
Our PhD students often remain in academia and research, however there is a growing need for our PhD’s in the private sector as well. While the value from Johns Hopkins University is undeniable, it is the quality of research and the renown of the faculty that make this educational experience truly valuable. You will find the work here challenging and personally rewarding.
