Abstract

Online extremism has been a growing concern over the last two decades and an active area of cross-disciplinary research. In this talk, Jennifer Golbeck will present her ongoing work studying online radicalization through research on “incels,” an online misogynistic extremist group associated with mass violence events. This research includes qualitative and quantitative analysis of behavior in incel forums, text analysis for understanding forum-specific cryptolects, and modeling of radicalization on the individual level. We will look at the implications this work carries for understanding radicalization in other spaces, online malicious behavior, and societal-level implications of AI.
