Shiye “Sally” Cao has been named as a finalist for the Computing Research Association’s Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award. The award program recognizes undergraduate students in North American colleges and universities who show outstanding potential in an area of computing research.

A fourth-year undergraduate student in the Department of Computer Science, Cao has been an integral member of both the Johns Hopkins Chapter of the Society for Women Engineers (WSE) and the Hopkins Undergraduate Leaders in Advising program, helping to foster diversity in the JHU CS community. Through SWE, Cao mentored six first-generation computer science students and has aided many others in her position as lead course assistant for the department’s Machine Learning course.

Under the guidance of John C. Malone Assistant Professor of Computer Science Chien-Ming Huang, Cao researches AI-assisted human decision-making, AI-human interaction, and the relationship between decision time and people’s reliance on AI assistance. She plans to continue her research on the AI-human dynamic in her future PhD studies.
