I am an Associate Professor in Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University, with a secondary appointment in Cognitive Science. I am a member of the Center for Language and Speech Processing (CLSP) and lead Natural Language Understanding research at the Human Language Technology Center of Excellence (HLTCOE). My work focuses on knowledge acquisition, how to inform machines about the world. This might be specific things (e.g., Johns Hopkins University is located in the city of Baltimore), or general background knowledge (e.g., Universities are attended by students, and are sometimes located in cities).
This research involves topics in natural language processing, data mining, social media analysis, machine learning, linguistic semantics, and generally most things Artificial Intelligence or Cognitive Science. With my students and other colleagues I attempt to extract structure from text, design algorithms and data structures for working with large collections of data, and worry about understanding how people convey knowledge through language.
