Department of Computer Science General Faculty Search

With the anticipated opening of our new building, Malone Hall, the Department of Computer Science at The Johns Hopkins University is planning for substantial multi-year growth.  We are currently seeking applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions at all levels. The search is open to all areas of Computer Science.  We particularly encourage candidates with research interests in algorithms, information security, natural language, and machine learning. We also welcome applicants who would enhance our institutional strengths with a focus on data-intensive computing, computational biology, and health-related applications of computing.

Johns Hopkins University is the nation’s first research University. Established in 1876, the JHU has nine academic divisions and campuses throughout the Baltimore-Washington area. The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the Whiting School of Engineering, the School of Education and the Carey Business School are based at the Homewood campus in northern Baltimore. The schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing share a campus in east Baltimore with The Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Peabody Institute, a leading professional school of music, is located on Mount Vernon Place in downtown Baltimore. The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies is located in Washington's Dupont Circle area. The Applied Physics Laboratory is a division of the university co-equal to the nine schools, but with a non-academic, research-based mission. APL, located between Baltimore and Washington, supports national security and also pursues space science, exploration of the Solar System and other civilian research and development. More information on JHU can be found at: http://webapps.jhu.edu/jhuniverse/information_about_hopkins/facts_and_statistics/

Computer Science at Johns Hopkins is a highly research-focused department, with average funding, graduate degrees granted, and publication and citation rates that are comparable to top ten departments nationally. Our strategic plan has chosen the areas of interest above as those that take particular advantage of the strengths of Johns Hopkins broadly, as well as advancing the research mission and reputation of the department. We also enjoy very good relationships with several internationally recognized interdisciplinary research centers and world-class departments.  In particular:

Applicants in the area of Natural Language would also be associated with:

Applications interested in Data Intensive Computing would also be associated with:

Applicants in Information Security would also be associated with:

Applicants in health-related areas may chose to be associated with one or more of:

Candidates in the area of machine learning should browse through the following site, which highlights JHU's wide range of machine learning research across several departments:

Candidates in the area of computational biology may be interested in collaborating with the following organizations:

These are all departments and interdisciplinary centers that include a machine learning, data analysis, visualization, and/or biomedical component, and which are extremely highly ranked nationally and internationally in their areas of expertise.

All applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field and are expected to show evidence of an ability to establish a strong, independent, multidisciplinary, internationally recognized research program. Commitment to quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels will be required of all candidates. Preference will be given to applications at the assistant professor level, but other levels of appointment will be considered based on area and qualifications. The Department is committed to building a diverse educational environment; women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants should apply using the online application. Applications should be received by December 15, 2012 for full consideration. Questions should be directed to fsearch@cs.jhu.edu. The Johns Hopkins University is an EEO/AA employer.
