Growing up in Rockwall, Texas, Maddie Stone became intrigued with computer security through television dramas such as “NCIS.” But it wasn’t until she heard about the Johns Hopkins Information Security Institute (JHUISI) at a Hopkins open house that her interest was really piqued.
“I didn’t come in with a lot of knowledge of computer science,” said Stone, who was attracted to Hopkins’ program because the computer science program allowed her to select a concentration.
By spring of her sophomore year, Stone – deftly handling a double major in computer science and Russian – was deep into her computer security concentration, and was using her foundational knowledge to create “real world projects.”
“After just three core programming classes, I learned how to program a working software router to access websites. It was definitely one of those ‘wow’ moments for me.”
