Something about an Island

Denmark Information

Given the crisp word "Denmark", nine tenths of the earth inhabitants would instantly delight their brains in the elegance of the little mermaid, childhood-reminiscent fairy tales of Hans Anderson, or delicious traces of Danish cookies. Aero Island? Aero Island? The majority of earth brains  would runmmage their databases perplexedly until highlighted "sorry, no match found" blinks and gloats.

Outside the circle of travel bugs, Aero island comfortably keeps a low-key profile. Cunningly hidden in the torrent of the Baltic Sea, Aero is one of the most out-of-the-way places in Denmark, considering the relatively small size of the country. To get there from metropolitan Copenhagen, one first needs to take a train to the city of Odense, transfer to another train to the town of Svendborg, then cross the 18-mile sound on a scantily scheduled ferryboat. "Why take such pains?", you might ask. Well, it all started with a research I did before the trip, when I read voraciously through various Internet discussion groups on traveling in Denmark. In a thread titled "rank the most beautiful place of Denmark", a Dane responded: "If you are a tourist who likes tourists, go for Copenhagen, but my personal favorite is Aero, a Danish countryside with local Danes." I firmly hold the conviction that traveling is all about getting to know what the place is REALLY about. Places well off the beaten track resonates with my belief. In a way, Aero symbolizes how far I had reached into the life of Danes.

Besides, I love islands; I love the sense of isolation from the modern world. I was determined to meet Aero no matter what.
