SIGPHON (Alain Thériault) =========================== Alain Thériault Liaison Officer SIGPHON Executive Committee ACL Special Interest Group in Phonology (SIGPHON) 1999-2000 Activity Report SIGPHON held its fifth workshop this year, under the auspices of COLING 2000. Attendance was slightly up, with 21 registrants and 28 hardcopy proceedings sold. The workshop title was "Finite-State Phonology," a theme that succesfully brought together different descriptive traditions (rewrite rules, DP, OT) and fostered discussion of cutting-edge computational and formal issues. The program included six papers, a discussion of relevant papers from the main conference, and a panel titled "How to Design a Great Workbench Tool for Working Phonologists?" SIGPHON continues to serve the community by maintaining a mailing list and online bibliographies at its web site, www.cogsci.ed.ac.uk/sigphon/. Membership currently stands at 176, with 36 members declaring computational phonology as their "primary" interest.
