ACL-2000 GENERAL CHAIR (Hitoshi Iida)

I set up the ACL-2000 Executive Committee through discussions with ACL
Executive Committee. Some chairs had been assigned to each role; the
Honorary Chair, Aravind Joshi; the Program Co-Chairs, K. Vijayashanker
and Chang-Ning Huang; and the Local Organizing Chair, Dekai Wu.
Workshop Chair: Nicoletta Calzolari
Tutorial Co-Chairs: John Carroll and Hemant Darbari
Demonstration Chair: Norbert Reithinger
Publicity Co-Chairs: Steven Krauwer and Keh-Yih Su
Student Research Workshop Co-Chairs: Sergey Pakhomov and Olivia Kwong
Student Research Workshop Faculty Advisor: Philip Resnik

I arranged the whole time schedule till the ACL-2000 and through
discussions with co-/chairs of PC, Workshop, Tutorial and Demos we
decided their important dates.

Sponsorship:
I discussed with the Local Chair on Asian sponsorship. I made much
effort to get sponsorship from Japanese companies. But this effort
failed because they judged there was no merit for themselves more than
Logos. They usually organize a special committee so called ``organizing
committee'' whose main job is to collect money and whose members come
from each company before starting the organizing process for the
excecutive committee. I wrote down the difference between the present
Japanese sponsorship system and the west one.

Welcome reception:
I invited President Nagao of Kyoto University to the ACL-2000. We have
his keynote lecture at the welcome reception in addition to Prof.
Joshi’s keynote lecture. I arranged the program for the reception with
the Local Chair.

Thematic session on Asian languages:
I helped the Program Committee to organize one thematic session for
Asian languages merged with the proposal of Indian Language Processing.
