EUROPEAN CHAPTER (Donia Scott) ============================== REPORT on EACL activities ------------------------- EDUCATION AND TRAINING Following a decision by the EACL board in early 1991, the organisation is increasing its support for training in computational linguistics within Europe. Over the last year, this activity has been focussed on following events: 1. European Masters in Speech and Language: This is a pan-European course on NLP and Speech Sciences in which any European university can participate, provided that they can demonstrate that they cover some of the contents of the Euromasters. Students can attend courses in any participating university. There are currently 14 participating universities. Because of the different Higher Education systems within Europe, the course is implemented through certification. Students who have completed the required number of courses on the EM-L\&S syllabus, a project (preferably in industry) and attended a 1-week Easter school, are elegible for certification. This certification is endorsed jointly by EACL and ESCA (European Speech Communication Association). The EACL has a the right to appoint one member to the Board of the EM-L\&S. The term of office of our representative is 4 years. Currently serving is Walter Daelemans. 2. ESSLLI Summer Schools: For the second year running, the EACL has provided direct support to the prestigeous ESSLLI summer school, by sponsoring an introductory course in Computational Linguistics. Sponsorship takes the form of covering the lecturer or lecturers' travel expenses and accommodation. In return, student attendees who are ACL members receive a reduced registration. This year, we sponsored a course on HPSG by Anne Copstake and Rob Malouf. The cost to EACL was 700 Euros. 3. Revised constitution The organisation's constitution is currently being revised to reflect the changes that have come about from the internationalisation of ACL. The draft of the new constitution will be circulated to members for comments in December.
