I am a research scientist at the Johns Hopkins Human Language Technology Center of Excellence.

My main research interests are machine translation, syntax, parsing, and language modeling.

I maintain the Joshua decoder.

My publications, code and datasets, miscellaneous personal stuff.

Last spring, I taught a class on machine translation with Chris Callison-Burch and Adam Lopez.

I am in the process of building a tree house for some small children of mine in a hundred year old oak tree located just beyond the two-story deck behind my house. You can see some pictures and potentially useful notes about the design and construction in this Flickr set.

This is a great bread recipe that I've been modifying over the years, with the help of some friends.
I took out an insurance policy against the (doubly unlikely) events of the Singularity and subsequent hostile takeover of humanity by superintelligent machines, on the idea that if they listen to anybody, it will be Ray Kurzweil. Should I ever have to cash in, I'll do everything in my power to protect this guy, who had the idea while we were standing in line to have a book signed after a talk. [Disclaimer: this bit of fun should not be interpreted as support for Kurzweil's speculations in this area.]
