The policies for this course are not very different from those of other courses you have taken in the past. You should read them carefully anyway! If anything is not clear to you, please ask me for more details. I will try to enforce these policies strictly but fairly and with no exceptions.
The basic grading policy is explained on the course home and should be detailed enough. Here are the rules for related matters.
If you believe that we made a mistake in grading your homework or exam, you can request a regrade. Your request must be received within one week after the grade was posted. You must supply a short written description of the mistake(s). If applicable, you have to hand the exam back in. Please be aware that we will regrade the entire homework or exam, so your score can go up or down.
Note that everyone starts this course with a number of "free points" for the entrance exam. I consider these points your "buffer" for the occasional grading problem that cannot be resolved. I also consider these points "anti whining points" and repeated begging for half points without any good reason might cost you those points.
All assignments are due on the date listed in the schedule and at the time given on the particular assignment. However, due dates might move a little so keep reading the mailing list for the latest information. I do not accept late assignments, so please don't email me once the electronic turnin declines your submission. If you missed it, you missed it.
If you miss an exam, I will not allow you to make it up another time. If you missed it, you missed it. The sole exception to this rule is the entrance exam: Even if you did not take the exam, you will still receive full points for it if you contact me; but see the note on grading errors and whining above.
Cheating of any kind will be handled according to the established policies of UCR and could lead to your removal from the university. It's simply not worth the risk, even if you have to spend one more quarter around UCR because you fail the course. You have been warned! Below are some clarifications though.
Everything you are graded on in the course must be your own work. This does not mean that you can never talk to anyone else about what we are doing in the course. What it does mean though is that you can not share code or solutions with others. If you talk to someone about a problem and come up with a solution as part of that conversation, you have to document that!
