The workshop on "**Task Modeling and Recognition for Skill Assessment and Automation in
Robotic Surgery**" is a half-day satellite workshop of the [[http://www.icra2011.org/|IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA)]], held at the Shanghai International Convention Center, Shanghai, China, May 9-13,2011.  

===== Call for Abstracts =====
Robotics is creating new ways to analyze and to perform surgeries. On
the one hand, large amounts of kinematic data become available to
model, understand and assess the surgical performance. On the other
hand, in the near future, portions of the surgeries will be performed
autonomously, via robotic assistants and under the supervision of
surgeons. Yet, a bridge between these two research areas needs to be
established in order to design efficient Human Machine Collaborative
interfaces, which will 1) learn from previous experiences, 2) teach
new operators, 3) adapt to the skills of the surgeon and to the
specificities of the patient, and 4) provide convenient human-machine
interactions that permit seamless switching between manual operation
and automation.

The workshop aims at bringing the recognition and robotic research
communities together to discuss recent efforts in developing efficient, context-aware and user-friendly surgical robotic assistants

We invite electronic submissions (abstracts) for poster presentation in the following areas:
  * Modeling/representation of surgical procedures/tasks
  * Modeling methods for surgical simulation and training
  * Recognition of surgical steps/actions/events
  * Context-aware operating rooms
  * Automation in the operating room
  * Learning from surgical demonstration
  * Teaching methods using surgical robots
  * Surgical skill assessment
  * Human-Machine surgical systems and architectures
  * Surgical user interfaces 

===== Goal =====
The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers interested in the topic of human motion analysis in general, and in the development of context/skill-aware surgical assistant systems in particular. We would like to get presentations describing current research or reviews of the field.
