1996 SCDC Deadline

Where does the time go?!?  A back-channeled message reminded me that the 
deadline for submissions for the SouthCentral Developmental Conference is just 
two weeks from tomorrow (October 1st)!!!  I might be able to stretch that a 
couple of days, but things here are very  busy, so get your panel ideas and/or 
papers in ASAP!!!  They also asked me to post the submission guidelines one 
more time.  Sorry for the clutter.


      1996 SouthCentral Forensics Development Conference
November 15-17, 1996

Background:

This event will be sponsored by the Southern Journal of Forensics  in 
conjunction with the UT-Tyler "Patriot Games" Tournament.  You need not enter 
the tournament to take part in the Development Conference.  The conference will 
consist of two divisions: 1) Competitive Papers in Forensics, and 2) 
Traditional Panels and/or Discussions/Debates on Forensics.  

Rationale:

1) Even coaches eventually need tenure.  Discussions with other forensics 
professionals have led us to conclude that travel to tournaments is not often 
considered an activity worthy of tenure consideration.  Therefore, the Journal  
has decided to follow the example of Pi Kappa Delta and attempt to host a 
Development Conference in conjunction with a tournament.  The intent is that 
coaches, who will probably travel their teams to compete in the Patriot Games 
Tournament, would now have the opportunity to "kill two birds with one stone," 
by having a competitive paper or panel presentation accepted within a 
professional conference setting which could turn into a publication 
opportunity; and thus, make the tournament an event worthy of consideration by 
a future tenure committee.

2) Scholarship.  Many within the forensics community have expressed concern 
over the lack of genuine scholarship opportunities from within the activity.  
We travel to tournaments as a collective representation of the forensics 
discipline, but rarely have the opportunity to share ideas.  In addition,  a 
Student Competitive Papers Division would enhance the educational experience; 
as well as, allow us the opportunity as a community to help our students and 
graduate assistants in a meaningful way.


Competitive Papers in Forensics:

Submission Guidelines

The Competitive Papers Division will accept entries in two categories: 1) 
student authored; and 2) faculty authored.  Manuscripts will be submitted to 
blind peer review.   The top three manuscripts will be presented in a special 
panel and appropriate awards will be conferred during the consolidated awards 
assembly of the "Patriot Games" tournament.  

Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced and conform to either current APA or 
MLA guidelines.  An abstract of not more than 100 words must accompany each 
manuscript.  To assure the process of blind review, authors must include a 
separate title page to include: title, author(s) name(s), professional 
affiliation(s), address, telephone number and e-mail.  In addition, any 
references to the author(s) or host institution(s) should be omitted from the 
body of the work.  Four copies of the manuscript must be submitted.  The 
deadline for submission is October 1st, 1996.

The subject/content area of the manuscript is open to the author(s) so long as 
it addresses some issue relevant to the forensics community as a whole.   Some 
suggested areas would include professional concerns for forensic professional, 
debate theory, individual events/performance theory, tournament administration, 
ethics in forensics, the future of forensics and current trends and 
controversies in forensics.

Panels on Forensics

These panels would be formatted in the same manner as traditional panels at SCA 
or any other professional speech convention.  However, discussions or debates 
on current topics and/or issues are acceptable and encouraged.  Again, the 
subject and/or content matter is up to the panel participants.  Some suggested 
areas would include professional concerns for forensic professional, debate 
theory, individual events/performance theory, tournament administration, ethics 
in forensics, the future of forensics and current trends and controversies in 
forensics.

 Panel submissions should include:  Title of the panel, a brief abstract and 
rationale for the panel itself, names and affiliations of the chair and 
participants, titles and abstracts of participants' papers, respondent's name 
and affiliation.  Submissions will be accepted until October 1st, 1996.
