Help
I would like to offer a belated thanks to the many members of the
community that helped the Syracuse Debate Team last year by writing
letters in support of more stable funding for the Debate program. The
efforts of the squad and your letters truly payed off. Those combined
efforts helped us to make our funding problems a major issue on campus
(it was a front page story in our daily campus newspaper for about a
week) and as a result, the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs has come
through with additional travel money for us. We put in a budget request
and actually had the full amount approved by the Office for Academic
Affairs (something even I didn't think would happen). We even received
a little increase over last years budget (something else that I didn't
really think would happen). HOWEVER, in our on-going struggle to make
the financial allocations to the Debate program more "consistent" in
terms of how the team is funded, the Vice-Chancellor of the University
has asked me to provide him with information that I currently do not
have. You see, our money is allocated to us by: 1) Departmental Funds
allocated by our College, 2) The Student Government Association, and now
3) The Vice-Chancellors office. What the Vice-Chancellor wants to know
is how much money other debate teams receive from their student
governments so that he can bring those findings to the Faculty Senate
and the financial board of the student government in an effort to have
the student government come up with a more "consistent" amount of
funding for the debate team. The reason for this is so he can come up
with a fixed amount that he will allocate to us out of his personal
budget each year. This year, we told him how much we needed (it's still
not as much as we would have liked but it's better than I would have
envisioned) and how much we've received from our other sources (the Dean
of our college & Student Government), and he covered the rest. In order
for us to become a line item in his budget, he wants an estimate as to
how much S.G.A. will be giving us each year so he can budget for us
accordingly. Thus, the information I need which I hope that some of you
can pass along to me is:
1) Do you receive funding from your Student Government Association?
2) If so, is it a pretty consistent amount of funding or does it
fluctuate from year to year?
3) If it is a consistent amount, how much do you receive annually and if
it is a fluctuating amount, what is the normal range?
4) Are there any stipulations as to how you can spend the money?
5) Specifically, are you allowed to use the money for travel? You see,
our S.G.A. will give us money but none of it can be used for travel. So
what we are trying to prove is that other Student Government groups
allocate money to their Universities Debate Teams that can be used for
travel.
Sorry for both the clutter and the hassle. I know this is a busy time
of year for everyone but your help would be greatly appreciated and will
hopefully enable us to resolve this issue once and for all. Thank You.
Sincerely,
Frank Irizarry
