Subject: Evan Bayh and Indiana U
Hi Tom, long time no see. I was Evan's debate coach at IU for three years,
where Mr. Gibson was my graduate assistant for one year. My experience
with Evan was wonderful. He was undoubtably a debater for the same reason
he was a student at Indiana (after attending High school in Virginia) and a
member of a Fraternity, and several other activities he engaged in during
college: Politics/law was where he was heading and he used college as a way
to prepare himself for his career-what a novel concept for a college
student!! I never received less than 100% from Evan, in researching,
travelling or working with new students. He was well liked on our team, he
associated well with a very diverse group of students, he was bugged all
the time at tournaments by people who were more impressed with his father's
fame than he was -remember that Birch was a candidate for President in the
1976 primaries-and he was constantly polite to people who thought he was a
good sounding board to express their disagreement or agreement with his
father's political beliefs. I left IU in 1978 to take the job at San
Francisco State, and I cannot remember if Evan had a year left at IU or
whether he graduated that year and left for Virginia Law School. If Evan
stayed for one more year I cannot confirm or deny Dirk's claim. However,
while I was director of debate I never recall Evan missing a meeting, a
research night in the library, a practice round, a tournament, and
certainly he was never kicked off the team.
If this story is circulating widely I would appreciate it if you could
circulate this response along the same route.
