Re: Wheaton Fall tournament
WHEATON COLLEGE FALL INVITATIONAL
SEPTEMBER 27-28, 1996
FOUR DIVISIONS !!!
NDT Programs WELCOME
Dear Colleagues,
Due to the consistently excellent response to our fall NOVICE (and
others) tournament over the past seven years, we would like to continue
the tradition by inviting you to the 10th annual Wheaton College
Invitational on September 27-28, 1996. I thank each of you for your
support of this tournament and, more importantly, for your support of
novice debate. Many of us in the Upper Midwest believe that the future of
debate rests in continuing to offer entry-level instruction and
compe-tition to those who lack high school experience. I'm also convinced
that no amount of lecture can match the "immersion" method of learning our
activity. As a result, our tournament is EARLY in the semester at a time
when nobody is likely to "feel" prepared but when everyone needs this
push to get prepared.
Since this is an early season tournament, I consider competitive
parity and a strong educational environment to be higher objectives than
maximizing elimination rounds. As a result, we will offer FOUR divisions
with the intention of not collapsing any division unless it is impossible
for teams to have six different opponents. Like last year we will offer a
Junior Varsity division for students with less than two years of
collegiate experience and an Open division for your experienced debaters.
Due to its success last year we will again offer two separate
novice divisions. We will have a traditional Novice division that will
utilize the CEDA eligibility standards and follow a traditional
switch-side format. We will also offer a division that has been
tremendously successful for the past six years. We will have a BEGINNER
division for students with NO experience, (collegiate, high school, LD,
etc.). Since we have a novice division, we will make no exceptions on the
strict eligibility for the Beginner division. In the Beginner division,
students will debate only one side of the resolution (please try to
balance your affs and your negs).
As we did last year, we will offer a tournament designed to be
easy on your travel schedule -- 4:00 PM Friday to early after-noon on
Sat-urday; easy on your budget -- $30.00 for first 2-per-son unit, $20.00
for every additional 2-person unit; easy on your students -- we will
accommodate 4-person units in the BEGINNER division so that students do
NOT have to debate both sides of the resolution; and easy on you -- rounds
are scheduled in one building with enough time between rounds to give
adequate oral and written critiques.
FORMAT: We will have four divisions
BEGINNER (NO previous experience). Beginning debaters will debate
only one side of the resolution. Wheaton will provide fill-ins to
accommodate squads with a single two-person team. We will offer six
preliminary rounds of competition with a final round comprised of the top
affirmative and the top negative team. Wheaton teams will com-pete in
preliminary rounds but will not win awards or qualify for the final round.
The time format will be 8-3-4 with 8 minutes prep-aration time.
NOVICE (CEDA definition -- both speakers must be in their first or
second semester of debate competi-tion INCLUDING HIGH SCHOOL). The time
format will be 8-3-4 with 8 minutes prep-aration time. We provide the
appropriate number of elimination rounds. We will also ask you to verify
that students have not competed in three final rounds.
JUNIOR VARSITY and VARSITY divisions will provide switch-side
competition with a 8-3-5 (5 minute prep) format. We provide the
appropriate number of elimination rounds.
JUDGING: Based on the
favorable response in past years, we will again permit the use of
"varsity" students as judges in the beginner division. We do ask,
however, that you carefully select your critics and provide them with
useful in-struction concerning judging, ballot-writing, constructive
criti-cism, etc. Our goal is to provide the optimal learning environment
for beginning debaters rather than give varsity de-baters an outlet for
"getting even," "venting their spleens," or "displaying their vast
knowledge about arcane debate theory." We do ask that you provide
qualified faculty of graduate assistants to judge in the other three
divisions.
FEES: $30.00 for the first 2-person team
$20.00 for each additional team
$50.00 per 2-person team for hired judges (we want judges rather
than your money- we will also hire your extra judges for
$15.00/round)
AWARDS:
Beginner: 1st Place overall team (winner of the final round)
1st, 2nd, 3rd Place affirmative and negative teams
1st, 2nd, 3rd Place individual speakers.
Nov/JV/Var: All elimination teams
1st, 2nd, 3rd Place individual speakers

September 25th by 4:00 PM. I would prefer that you phone rather than mail
your entries since we can then be sure that none are lost. If any
last-second emergencies arise please call ahead to tell about the changes.
