A "W" for truthseeking and education *Clarification*
Although I did try to separate competition and education in my earlier
post, it was only to create a hypothetical in which to clarify and
evaluate purpose within debate. I think most people in the community
would agree that there are great educational benefits and purposes in
debate. When I saw discussions that seemed divisive on Ceda-L, I just
wanted to pose this hypothetical for us to consider before we continue
such discussions and behaviors.
I believe that the competitive aspect of debate is one of the keys to its
success. I know that I personally was motivated to learn more because
debate made a sport of the educational process. However, I'm talking
about losing sight of education in the heat of competition.
The debate community should know (from popular disadvantage stories) that
internal conflicts affect external strength. As a community with a
unique and wonderful educational forum for society we should work toward
increasing support for debate in educational institutions, in government,
and in communities. This kind of progress can suffer from that kind of
division.
Thanks

P.S. It is a really fun game too : )
