1996 North Texas Debates
October 11, 1996
Dear Colleague:
The University of North Texas Debate Forum and the Department of
Communication Studies at UNT are pleased to invite you and your
debate teams to attend the annual William R. DeMougeot Debates on
December 7-9, 1996. The tournament is CEDA-sanctioned, and results
will be reported to the CEDA Secretary and the NDT Ranking Director.
Our tournament this year will include two divisions of debate: Open
and Junior. A novice division will be offered if entries warrant.
We will provide eight rounds of debate in each division, four pre-
sets and four power-matched rounds. Our hospitality at the DeMougeot
Debates this year includes a reception after the rounds conclude on
Saturday night, as well as providing coffee and bagels each morning.
Preliminary rounds and elimination rounds will be held at the
University. The tournament hotel this year is the Radisson, which
has guaranteed us a special rate for participants in the tournament.
You should make reservations as soon as possible. Registration will
be held at the Radisson on Friday night.
I join with my assistants, David Breshears, Christy Lowrey, and Eric
Mueller, in inviting you to come to Denton for this year's edition of
the DeMougeot Debates. If any of you would like to receive a
hard copy of this invitation, feel free to give me a call.
Sincerely,
Mark DeLoach
Director of Debate
University of North Texas

Registration Information
We will accept entries for the tournament through Wednesday,
December 4 at 5:00 pm. Please try to enter as soon as possible.
Entries can be sent via e-mail (deloach@terrill.unt.edu) or by fax
(817 565-3630).
Divisions
We will have two divisions of debate at the tournament this year.
Open division is open to any undergraduate student with eligibiity
remaining. Junior division is open to any undergraduate student with
less than four semesters participation in intercollegiate debate.
Judging
A qualified judge must be provided to cover your judging commitments.
One judge is required for each two teams entered in any division.
There may be some judges available for hire at the rate of
$75/uncovered team, but you should let us know well in advance if you
need to hire judges. Judging obligations extend through the first
elimination round, or one round beyond your team's elimination.
Format and Assumptions
We will use the 9-3-6 format, with ten minutes preparation time per
team. Rounds 1-4 will be present to maximize geographical diversity.
Rounds 6 and 8 will be power-matched high/low within brackets.
Rounds 5 and 7 will be power-matched high/high. Debate teams consist
of two persons. In instances where one individual cannot participate
in a debate round, that team will receive a loss, and zero speaker
points will be recorded. We will use the CEDA guidelines for
determining the number of teams advancing to elimination rounds. WE
WILL NOT BREAK BRACKETS IN ELIMINATION ROUNDS.
While we do believe that there are some debates which are difficult
to decide, we must insist that judges render a decision which
indicates one (and only one) team which does the better job of
debating/wins the debate. Judges who do not wish to render such a
decision in a particular debate will force the tab room to flip a
coin to determine a winner and a loser in a given debate.
Fees
Entry fees are $50/team for all teams. This includes trophies and
tournament supply expenses. Hospitality expenses are not paid for
out of receipts for the tournament.
Housing
We have reserved a block of rooms at the Radisson here in Denton.
These rooms are tentatively priced at $65/room for 1-4 persons (the
price may be reduced--phone the Radisson for details). If possible,
you should try to stay at the Radisson, as this is where the pairings
will be released and registration will take place. Please confirm
your reservation at the Radisson by calling (817) 565-8499. Make
sure to mention the North Texas Debate Tournament. If the Radisson
is sold out, please call us and we will recommend some other hotels
in the area.
Transportation
We will provide shuttle service between the Radisson and UNT during
the tournament. Those requiring transportation from DFW to the hotel
should contact us as soon as possible with your flight information.
