Where to be Nov. 15-17
Just to keep it visible, here is another reminder of the eleventh annual
Gateway Debate Tournament:
This year, with the "extra free weekend" on the calendar from SCA, we
decided back in March to hold the CEDA events in our tournament on a
special weekend. Thus, we will be able to offer the following advantages
to our loyal patrons:
***An excellent tournament facility for debate work and evidence space (the
King Henry VIII Hotel, at the low rate of $49.00 per night. You may go
ahead and make reservations by calling the King Henry VIII (Ramada) hotel
at 314-731-3040.
Make sure you mention the UM-St. Louis Gateway Debate Tournament. Ask for
Kim Carter if you get an inexperienced clerk.
***A seven round tournament for CEDA/NDT policy debaters, by CEDA/NDT
policy debaters. Plenty of time this year for oral critiques and
constructive interactions between debaters and critics!
***A tradition of large divisions for novice and LD debaters.
***The same, low entry fee.
***A tournament originally scheduled--for the 11th year in a row--on the
AFA Calendar date advertised. Many have thus already made plans to attend.
***THE FINAL LEG OF ESTABLISHED JESUIT ROUND ROBIN QUALIFICATION FOR THE
NATION'S OLDEST CEDA ROUND ROBIN TOURNAMENT at SIU!
***The same efficient, dependable, friendly tabroom operations as for the
past 11 years.
***A tournament that "gives back" to its participants with quality awards,
between-round coffee and food, etc.
***A major city location with loads of fun stuff to do during down time!
Easy to get to via Lambert International.
***Ground transportation provided to and from tournament as well as to and
from airport--but ease in renting vehicles for those desiring to explore
elsewhere!
***Some form of Mutually Preferred Judging will be used, as dictated by
constraints of tournament size, etc. We are already working on a top-notch
judging pool,as allowed by a "big-city" location.
***Four divisions--CEDA Open, CEDA Junior, CEDA Novice, CEDA LD.
This will be an intense debate experience for all. We hope to see all of
you for an enjoyable, competitive, educational, and fun weekend.
Sincerely,
Tom Preston

Judges cover two 2-person teams or 4 LD debaters. Hired judging fees are
$125.00 per uncovered team--we would like your judges rather than the $$,
but if there is no way to cover and you can afford, we have awesome guest
judges that will make it worth the price.
CEDA rules will govern eligibility for each divisions. As per CEDA
guidelines, we will grant graduate students with NO prior experience (2
person, high school LD, or otherwise) before September 1996 the right to
compete along with undergraduate students with whatever eligibility.
All coaches are asked to rate their teams:
D--has never broken to elimination rounds in this division before
C--has broken to elimination rounds in this division at least once before
B--has broken to elimination rounds several times in this division and would
expect to break and perhaps advance as most event.
A--frequently breaks to elimination rounds in this division.
If you would like to enter in response to this notice (which will be posted
each week from now until the tournament), just fax a typed list of your
teams, their divisions, and their ratings (A-D), plus a list of judges,
plus a philosophy statement from each judge (a past CEDA nationals
philosophy would do, and if you have a judge who doesn't have a philosophy
statement, please indicate and I'll fax a form to fill out), to:
Tom Preston 1-314-516-5415.
Of course you may call in entries to Al Madrid at 1-314-516-5816, or Tom
Preston at 1-314-516-5498.
We look forward to seeing you during this "last chance" weekend before
Thanksgiving and SCA.
Cheers!
Tom Preston
