Damus & the West
A couple of quick observations:
1. Interesting that you didn't post the letter from Spewin' Ute Upton
that I was responding to. But given your vociferous indictments of
parli, I fear you may agree with his "get out of the kitchen"
comments regarding CEDA. I've seen people who support CEDA and still
relegate it to inferior status.
2. Your list of new programs doing NDT is impressive. I know you've
been gone for a decade, but if you'd check you'd see that all of the
programs you list have drifted in and out of NDT over the last
decade. UMKC won't switch, despite their continued rumblings. We still
don't have enough teams at most non-National western NDT tournaments
to break to semifinals. Ask Bjork about the Scrimmage or the steady
decline in GSL participants. Maybe being gone for a decade makes
these things easier to overlook.
3. I stand behind my claim that National circuit CEDA is a far more
educational endeavor than almost all of the Western NDT tournaments,
with the exception of the Cal Swing Tournaments, and even they have
seen better days. Has your team been to a Jesuit qualifier yet?
Check 'em out, esquire-dude!
4. I too hope that NDT and CEDA will merge. That would certainly
improve Western debate. But two and a half years of promoting that
concept have led me to believe that some sort of general
consciousness-shift in both organizations will be required. NDT needs
to reassess the widespread axiom that NDT really is much better than
CEDA. NDT needs to address why one individual can change the
eligibility rules solely to accomodate a new program. Debaters, like
Upton, need to grow up and stop spreading slander for recruitment
purposes.
Frankly, David, I'm a little shocked at your knee-jerk response.
Maybe that NDT-is-wonderful attitude will get you on the NDT
Committee, but it's really not worth much more. I know it's been over
a decade since we've really rapped, but I think you're operating more
on what you want to see than an assessment of reality.
Think about it, don't just react,
