Re: lexis

1. I think that any debater who uses an electronic service should know what
the license agreement says. If Jason's LEXIS agreement allows the debate
team to use the service away from campus that's great. Many agreements do
not allow such use and I believe that ethical debaters should (and will)
investigate what their LEXIS licenses allow. My LEXIS rep told me that NO
educational licenses allow ANY off campus use--my rep could be wrong--i dont
know. . .

2. No debate program should teach students to violate copyright, software
licenses, or licenses with electronic data retrieval services. If some
debate programs allow students to violate their school's license that is
wrong.

3. Evidence and evidence gathering techiniques are alwaus fair game in a
debate round. The essence of debate is to debate about the quality of
evidence. Why shouldn't debaters debate about whether or not their research
techniques create hiearchy and domination. Let me give you an example. When
I was in high school Mark Fabiani was one of the BEST college debaters in the
county. He now works at the White House for Bill Clinton. I am certain that
what he learned in college affects how he makes decisions. I would hope that
he learned that any system of domination and oppression is wrong--why should
not other debaters learn the same lesson????
