Re: Mexico as an option
For some of the reasons that have been aired on the list (and I found
Phil Voight's advocacy of the second-semester-only option especially
interesting), the repeat-topic would not often win. However, it does
create an option. People may like the topic. People may be just
starting to get beneath the surface to the more interesting aspects by
early December. People may not like the OTHER ballot choices. [I don't
recall the genesis of the idea, but it may have been the semester that
the topic committee went off the deep end and came up with choices like
a proposition of fact that extra-terrestrial life exists.] Whatever the
merits of particular first-semester topics, putting the OPTION on the ballot
seems like a good idea.
