Re: Point Inflation



Since this thread is starting to fade, I thought I should include one 
more point as an explanation to teams I have judged and a warning to 
those I have yet to judge.  I was not aware that the range of points had 
gotten so narrow - even six years ago it was not uncommon for debaters 
getting 25s and 26s in a few rounds to win speaker awards, at least in 
the Northeast (I speak from firsthand experience).  Based on this, I 
award points in a range from 25-29 for competent speakers, 20-25 for 
truly bad performances, and below 20 for outright stupidity or rudeness.  
If this is considered harsh, I make no apologies - at least I don't have 
a need for fractional points.  A 30, or "perfect score" is for near-perfect 
speeches.  In my opinion, these happen once every few tournaments.

If my ballots didn't already do it, this post should get me on a lot of 
strike sheets.
