Re: Money Spent on Traditional Hardware

While I'm in the office, I think the excessive amount of hardware given out
at tournaments is fairly ridiculous. This is not a feature unique to the
debate side of forensics. A few weekends ago I attended an IE
tournament, and the awards ceremony featured 17 events, six trophies for
each, plus sweeps, etc. And these things were huge. The silly thing about
it was that the same few people won all the awards (because there was no
novice division). So instead of having a hundred people win one trophy and
go home happy, the same ten people (who probably win every weekend) go home
with seven or eight huge trophies each.Wouldn't it seem that a person who
wins every week won't care how big or nice the trophies are (because they
may have over a hundred already), and the person who clears for the first
time also won't care how big or nice the trophies are, but rather is so
excited to have anything. Cut back on size, quality, reduce entry fees so
more people can participate, donate the money to teams/organizations/people
in need. It would make us a more responsible community. This is not to bag
on IE in general. I actually enjoyed myself at the tournament!
