I'm not so sure that this is true. I have certainly seen a number of
"scholarly" articles which involved some level of "sexist language
correction," ranging from:
"All of mankind [sic] has the right..."
to
"Any [person] tested is..."
It seems to me that the burden is to accurately represent the meaning of
the person quoted, as well as to indicate any alterations made for
clarity. This is the same as bracketing in a specific reference (such as
a name) when the quoted material only gives a generic reference.
