urban workshop
Tuna suggested that I post this to the L, in case other regions wished to
follow our lead. This fall, the IMPACT Coalition hosted a trnasitional
workshop dedicated to new novices and those making the transition from
novice to open debate. While not nearly as intense as ADI or the NDI, this
workshop helped 15-20 new debaters learn about CEDA, theory arguments,
on-line research,Fall topic analysis and a host of other issues. Many of
our students because of work or economic barriers can not afford the time or
the $$ to attend workshops faraway. This supplementary approach was run in
the evenings and on weekends to limit conflicts. The program was well
received and I have been approached about running a similiar workshop on the
spring topic. In line with the Coalition's goals of access, the costs are
$25 per student. We are tentatively looking at either an evening format
from Dec 20-23 and Dec 27-30 or a day-long format starting on or about Dec
27. We welcome those from the East or otherregions who will find themselves
in the NY area to attend for all or some of the days as well as information
requests for any one interested in replicating this program locally. Also,
if there are coaches or experienced debaters who will be in the NY area and
would like to lend a hand, all knowledgable sources are welcome. IMPACt
included in its Fall lineup a number of presenters who addressed how debate
helps overcome barriers in the workplace, discussed careers in law, biotech
and public relations and told "war stories" from their careers. Special
thanks to Johnathan Perry, Glenn Fuller and Tricia Seith, who as interns
from Cornell, prepared supplementary lecture materials for the debaters. I
hope IMPACT can gain take advantage of Cornell's community service program
for this winter project.
