First, let me say that I have sent a personal message to Professor
Strickland indicating my disappointment that this accusation was not
checked with anyone related to our program before being published over the
list.
I don't know why we would encourage teams from our own region to travel to
a distant tournament which we were going to attend. We see them enough! I
have no idea who the mysterious "friend from the East" is, but I will say
most emphatically that no one to my knowledge from Cornell has encouraged
or discouraged anyone from attending either the San Diego or the Emporia
tournaments. They will surely both be excellent tournaments, and we have
no reason to tell people which one to attend (given that they can attend
both if they wish).
I have the utmost respect for Professor Strickland, but condescending
language such as "surely, our Cornell friends realize that....." with
reference to a fine program and University based on some random rumor is
both insulting and unnecessary.
Cornell will be travelling out of the East this fall to the San Diego
tournament (and we have gone to USC and the Round Robin), but I fail to
see how this final question in Professor Strickland's message related to
our travel schedule is relevant.
Once again, this is not meant to be an insult to Professor Strickland. He
is one of the finest coaches in our activity. At the same time, Cornell is
one of the finest programs in our activity, and when false accusations
arise concerning our program, they must be addressed. Thank you.
