Research on race and gender
Friends and Colleagues:
Since my entry into graduate school at Kansas University, I have been
quite chagrined by the lack of institutional scholarship support from the
university for the program. Recently, however, during a discussion with
an individual in the university administration, it was suggested to me
that I prepare a formal write-up outlining the need for scholarship money
and in particular, if we would want to allocate the money toward
recruitement of women and minority students. I KNOW there data is
available out there about the rates of participation in competitive
debate programs for women and minority students and I would like to
review as much of that material as possible.
My plea for assistance is two-fold:
1) I would like citations for particular studies or research reports
about participation levels of women and minorities in debate programs;
2) Any descriptive research about program size, funding levels and
amount of scholarship would also be helpful. Invariably, the university
will ask for a baseline of support other schools have, etc. and I would
like to provide them that data if they ever get serious about finding
some money, any money for program scholarships.
For both of these areas, if anyone could pass along some cites that would
be most helpful. I am going to hit the library tomorrow and see
what turns up.
Thanks to everyone in advance.
