Nats. / Binghamton

On the nationals thread:
Being the coach of Binghamton's Debate Team, as well as being
a fellow debater, I feel that the big school/small school arguement is
the only issue for a small school when it comes to nationals. At the
end of next semester, I am responsible for deciding who will go to
nationals. We do not have the resources to travel out of our region
during the semester, and nationals is our only opportunity to do so.
As the coach of a small team, I have the responsibility of telling
debators whether or not they can compete on the national level. I
wouldn't think of sending an unexperienced team, and I use this as an
incentive for my teams to compete. Since nationals is used a goal for
them, they work harder to do well. I definately feel that nationals
shoudln't be a free for all tournament where all can compete, yet I
would tend to leave it up the individual coaches as to who they send
to nats. I think this is a better option than qualifier tournaments.

This leads me into my second area of discussion, the
Binghamton Tournament.

On the weekend of Nov. 17-18-19 we are hosting a duel CEDA and
IE tournament. The CEDA half was deemed by our region to be titled:
The Fall 1994 Eastern Regional Tournament
It seems like we're going to have a nice turnout, and we already have
our trophies ordered so that we can break to octofinals. As an aside,
our trophies are unique in breking down the sexist barrier in CEDA.
(You'll see :) We are only offering Novice and JV, so this is the
perfect tournament for those of you new to the circuit, or those
planning to go Open next semester.
The reason why I hope teams show support for our tournament is
very simple, the money we make from our tournament is used for our
competition fees in the Spring. If we don't make enough, we don't have
to worry about qualifying for nationals :O
