elitism, judging
Ok. After reading all these postings on the "elite", I decided that I had
to respond. I am from Texas Tech, not exactly a CEDA power, nor a part of
the "elite". Our program does not have massive back files, nor numerous
graduate assistants, nor a massive travel budget, nor scholarships. We
usually do not travel the national circuit, although we will be at UCO in
a couple of weeks. Even so, I agree with many, that becoming a part of
the "elite" is something that comes only by working your butt off!!! I
and others on my squad have been in rounds with teams that are considered
"elite", and usually, if we lost, we legitimately lost the round! If
not, it wasn't elitism that did us in, but simply bad judging!!! Bad
judging works both ways! It can screw a team that is in the Top 10, but it
can also screw a good regional team! That is why we need some sort of
mutual preference. It can only serve the best interest of all debate
programs, elite or non-elite, to have the best possible judges in the
round! There are some great judges in regional programs (our graduate
assistant is one of them), and surely there are some bad judges in the
elite programs (although rare). MP allows teams to get the best judges, no
matter whether they are elite or non-elite.
Waiting for all hell to break loose,
Joe Gantt
