Re: HS Tournament costs
Sean is absolutely right, High school tournament costs have gotten out
of hand. I know this perhaps better than most, I spent four years at a
private high school which, believe it or not, had no debate budget. The end
result of this was that for any tournament which required serious travel
students were required to pay for all of their expenses. What made it even
worse was that our coaches had an expectation that if we were going and had the
money to do so we necessarily had the money to pay for the best accomodations
etc. The experience was rarely a pleasant one. After all, how do you explain
to mom and dad that you need another $200 to go to this week's meet?
While I will admit that a reduction in costs would be helpful, I can
also see a positive side to the current situation. Following my sophomore
year, when I began to want to attend more national circuit tournaments, it
became an accepted rule that I had to earn the majority of the money to pay for
the tournaments I wanted to go to. This did two things, it caused me to focus
on the value of earning money for the things I wanted to do (which may sound a
little cliche by now) and it forced me to choose the tournaments which I
thought it was really worth my time to attend.
There I go thinking again,
Chris
