HELP!
I feel a little guilty about this. I have enjoyed communicating
directly with Maxwell about us judges and our apparent interventionist
impulses and
what debaters can do to pre-empt them. It has been yet another example of
me learning more from debaters than I could ever pretend they learn from
me. But this is my first communication to the whole list, and I come
here not to join in the discourse, but rather to beg a favor.
I learned this week that Syracuse's Graduate School has denied my request
to continue my tuition scholarship for the Spring 1994 semester. If the
university cannot guarantee me funding to complete my degree, then my
long, happy relationship with SU debate will likely end after
this semester. The Speech Communication Department intends to appeal this
decision, and our chair is confident that we will win.
But I would like him to be armed with as much evidence as he can. So I
am asking my friends in the CEDA community to please send letters of
recommendation on my behalf to Dr. Jack A. Barwind, Director and Chair, SU
Speech Communication Department, 400 Sims Hall, Syracuse NY 13244, and to
Dr. John C. Adams, Assistant Dean, SU College of Visual and Performing
Arts, 200 Crouse College, Syracuse NY 13244.
I should emphasize that these two gentlemen are very supportive of me, are
my friends, and (perhaps most importantly) are 2/3 of Lisa's GPA. The
purpose of these letters is to be evidence of my merit, not indictments of
the system. So I am asking that the letters be positive in tenor.
I know this request is something of an imposition when you all have
midterms and MOI responses to worry about. But to the extent you are
able, I would be very appreciative of your support. See you in
Burlington. Irwin.
