Re: A Delicate Disagreement



Hey, folks:

I didn't get quite the same assumption from DeLaughder's post, but maybe
my reading comprehension is slipping with age.  The argument I understood
(and the one I reiterated in my post on the same topic) was more like: the
disadvantages suffered by "small" programs will not be solved or
exacerbated to any significant extent by the mere choice of a topic area. 
In other words, yes, we are outnumbered and in some cases out-researched
when we face a Borg like Dartmouth or UMKC, but that has nothing to do
with whether we're debating oceanic resources or Mexico or
(hypothetically) treaties.  We seem to have done okay on the "enormous" 
pollution and Mexico topics, so I don't see disaster looming in the
headlights if Southeast Asia gets chosen.

Of course, nobody has answered my statement that case coverage is so
sparse in most rounds that this "delimiting" of the topic is irrelevant on
another level.
