Topic Areas, NDI, and conflict of interest
A thoughtful individual (not Mike Korcok, who has raised such concerns
previously) has indicated that it might be a conflict of interest for me to
congratulate the NDI faculty members who have topic areas selected to be in
the five finalists, since I am also on the topic committee.
I guess it is. Or is it?
Should I have: (am I missing some options?)
a. Not voted for those topic papers because of a conflict of interest;
b. Asked not to serve on the topc committee;
c. Get someone else to run NDI until I leave office;
d. Not made the conflict so obvious by keeping my mouth shut?
I guess what I should have done was the one I was least likely to do --
shut up! (option d)
I guess I don't feel too bad about it because I didn't notice 3 of them
were NDI faculty until about a week after the voting took place.
How come Simerly and Hoe (also on the Topic Committee for this vote and
also institute directors) didn't have this problem? Probably because they
know the secret I don't know ... keeping my mouth shut on many things
should be at least an option.
