Re: List merger/ Jamie's proposal
I agree with Alan--one world, one list. But I also think we should
seriously consider Tuna's offer to house the new list, since:
1) he's been in the same place forever and is likely to be there for a
while (Doyle and Jamey have done great, but seem more likely to move
about for a while)
2) Tuna's new toy--a dedicated server--will facilitate such a list free
relatively) from the whims of university computer services
I would, however, have one caveat, which is not directed at Tuna nor is
making any assumptions about how he would administer a list--I recommend
that we have some serious discussion about what the "rules" of the list
would be. Doyle and Jamey have slightly different assumptions, and maybe
we can break down the issues and discuss them (along with any parameters
that Tuna or his school would require) before getting a list message that
tells us what they are. Given the civility and generosity with which we
have discussed other issues, I'm sure this should be possible.
Some of the issues worth discussion might include:
1) Is the list moderated? If so, how so?
2) Must one who posts be a member of the list?
3) What are the advertising rules?
4) What about "Joe, will you please e-mail me" messages?
5) Can a person be "kicked off" the list? Under what circumstances? Who
decides?
I'm sure there are other issues as well.
Later,
Tom Jewell
