When deliberation preceeds advocacy....
I have been impressed recently by several posts which reveal contributors
to the l who are in a deliberative mode and not yet committed to advocacy
of a certain point of view to the exclusion of almost all others.
I have often believed that the best approach (but not the only) to
debating involved an initial suspension of the adversarial role in which
the participants were committed to inquiry without commitment. I think
this is certainly desirable in the early stages of exploring topic areas
and wording topics. I also believe that I have learned the most from my
colleagues and my students by opening myself up to the possibility of the
fallibility of my positions. I would like to see more of this on the l
and during the debate season in most aspects of our interactions.
