My Pals: Matt, Slusher, And Tune
Matt,
Thank you for the Denny's restauraunt subject line. It proves the point
that racist comments are being hurled and will be utilized if this topic
is chosen. Notice that their was an explicit statement that this had
absolututely nothing to do with my advocacy of civil rights per se, yet
the accusations were still made. This also serves as my reply to
Slusher. I'm glad that you've stayed away from this form of McCarthyism,
but that does not mean others will do the same.
Tuna,
Thanks for your insight into my life. Here are the reasons I quit
debate (I already explained these to Sue when I made my decision but I
guess I forgot to talk it over with you): 1) The extreme amount of
research that goes along with broad topics. I believe that has direct
application to this discussion. Although it is impossible to predict, my
guess is that you would have a very difficult time placing limits on a
civil rights resolution. With treaties, you pretty much know what you've
got to research. 2) I wanted to actually advocate the issues I believed
in through activist forms rather than just talking about the issues. As
President of the Progressive Coalition at KSU, I work with the Black
Student Union, the Hispanic American Leadership Organization, the ACLU,
Amnesty International, the Bisexual, Gay, and Lesbian Society, and the
National Organization for Women. I'm actually doing something about
civil rights. If you are concerned about civil rights, I would encourage
each of you to get involved on campus and in your communities. There is
so much work that needs to be done. However, I simply do not think civil
rights would be much fun to debate. Tuna, if you really want me to
debate, you will rank civil rights dead last. Show your concern for
a student.
