It depends.
Check out Lynn Margulis for hot deep thoughts on this issue. She co-authored a piece on this subject available from Nexis in the late 80's or early 90's with Sagan (not Carl). She also put out a book which speaks to this in the last few years.
Additionally -- the Xerox PARC researcher -- Marvin Minsky's conception of "brain children" may be relevant.
Also try Emechee's Garden in the Machine (or Machine in the Garden?... Something like that)... Additionally a good read on alife.
