Position Available - Fall 1996
Director of Forensics/Instructor (part time):
Seattle University is seeking a Director/coach for the University's
intercollegiate forensics team who is also capable of teaching courses in
public speaking in the Communication Department. This is a part time
position. The person hired will be in charge of a growing speech and
CEDA debate team that competes at regional (and occasionally national)
intercollegiate tournaments. The team has been focused on CEDA debate
for the past several years, but the University desires to expand
individual event offerings while maintaining the strong debate
tradition. The University seeks a person committed to increasing both
the number of students involved and the range of events team members
participate in at tournaments. Depending on candidate qualifications,
the Communication Department anticipates being able to hire the Director
as an adjunct instructor for one or two sections of COM 230: Public
Speaking each year.
Duties: Direct and coach the forensics team, including primary
responsibility for planning, scheduling, budgeting, and travel
arrangements for all tournaments attended. Recruit and coach students in
both individual events and debate. Represent Seattle University as a
coach and judge at tournaments. Frequent travel is required. Teach
undergraduate courses in persuasive public speaking as necessary and
available. Teaching responsibilities include design and preparation of
course content, teaching class and holding appropriate office hours, and
grading student work.
Desired Qualifications: Masters in Speech Communication (or related
field) plus experience coaching debate and speech at the university
level. Experience in forensics team administration. Teaching
experience in public speaking or communication is required for
consideration for the teaching portions of this position. Evidence of
teaching effectiveness will be requested of finalists.
Compensation: To be determined. Approximately $9000 for the forensics
portion of the position plus course-by-course compensation for teaching.
