Newnam and six

Newnam makes a number of cogent observations about modern debate.

But the nature of the activity will not be sufficiently chaneged by a
move to six rounds to induce science majors or others deterred by time
demands to join the ranks of those who approach debate the way Bill so
accurately describes. As Scott points out, the intensity level pre- and
post-round is such that quality replaces quantity in a move from six to
eight. And, most proposals for major national tournaments still envision
an unchanged number of days.

Tuna has the answer for attracting scientists and others. Local, novice
competition.
