Uh-oh ... getting sucked into another digressive thread ...
No one asks me to make any public endorsement of usenet groups. No one
asks my opinion at all, which is fine with me. In debates, debaters ask
me to sign a big piece of NCR paper which publicly documents that I
admitted their arguments had nonzero persuasive force. There's your
difference: debate arguments call for assent, which I decline to give to
certain arguments. The existence of a conversation elsewhere that doesn't
intersect my life doesn't call for my assent. There aren't enough hours
in the day for me to *dissent* from every viewpoint that I vehemently
oppose.
