six and randomness
All of those who so blithely dismiss arguments about how eight rounds of
prelims constructs a better elim bracket (with comments like "it's just
32 different teams," or, "the only real #1 seed is the ultimate
tournament winner") are hereby invited to the Bruschke Open. Six randomly
paired prelims, followed by drawing names out of a hat for seeding of
clearing teams.
Hey, and what about all of the people who were howling in agony about the
relatively insignificant effects on thte bracket of breaking brackets for
teams from the same school? The effects of six versus eight prelims are
orders of magnitude more significant.
My point: the impacts on the event as a competitive enterprise need to be
WEIGHED, not simply dismissed.
