Executive Committee
Dear Community,
I got back from a tournament this weekend and just read the
series of posts regarding executive committee discretion/silence/lack
of responsiveness. My first reaction was surprise because my
experience has been that the executive committee is committed to
serving the membership in an open and honest manner. My second
reaction was to think that Bear has a point because maybe I am just
assuming that y'all know that you can contact me at any time with
questions, comments, concerns, suggestions.
So, I apologize if I have not made that clear. My phone is (205)
348-8072 and my email is ccrensha@ccom.ua.edu. Please contact me any
time.
I will also be honest with you and say that I haven't had the time to
read each and every CEDA-L post carefully. I try to keep up with it
but it's very difficult for me to read hundreds of posts and respond
directly in a short period of time and meet my other responsibilities
at the same time.
So, I will echo Tuna's position and say that when
it's my turn to be responsible for directing the national tournament,
I will be very open to discussion and advisory motions/ballots about
how the tournament is to be run. It's the community's tournament not
my own. However, having been accused of arbitrariness, I think it
important that the discussion/decisions about procedures should occur
before the invitation goes out.
Now as for executive committee discretion or President's discretion
regarding how to run the tournament: we can change the constitution
if y'all want to.
Yes, there is truth to Bear's criticism that that procedure is
frustrating because the meetings were too long. A lot of that was my fault
because I presented a long report orally. In future business
meetings, I pledge to not talk too long. Frankly I was excited about the stuff
I had been working on and wanted to talk to y'all about it and I didn't want
to use up a lot of paper distributing a report but Bear
is right. It traded off with time for action items and for that I
apologize. I can't speak directly for Pam but I know that she is
committed to improving the organization by increasing the amount of
services we provide for our members. So she appointed committees
made up of some really wonderful people who came up with some great
documents/ideas to help people out e.g. Jim Hanson's cost committee.
And we spent time talking about it in the meeting. I personally
think that's a good thing but do understand the need for that not to
trade off with action items on the agenda.
In sum, I want y'all to know that you can contact me anytime with any
concern. If I miss a post on the L that is very important to you, I
am not intentionally sending out a message that I don't care or that
I am engaging a conspiracy of silence. I do care. I care very much.
Best to you and yours,
Carrie
