What is Pam doing with her time.
To Troy Coburn and others who worry about what your president is doing with
her time: In between attending debate and IE tournaments and teaching I
have been camping out in my office next to the phone and email to help
everyone with their tournament registrations that were due March 1. I have
been typing the nationals booklet for nationals and trying to track down
missing information, informing people of missing materials in the invite
and sending them their receipts, sending letters to committee members to
inform them about deadlines for their work, speaking with the Visitors
Bureau in Wichita to get donations for our receptions to cut costs for the
tournament, continuing last hope conversations with Nissan for the same
reasons, trying to arrange for an expert on racism to help with the Racism
Forum at nationals, working on a racism forum for my own program at this
week's team meeting, filling out my own CEDA registration form and writing
the recs for my students for All American and Academic All American and,
working on a CEDA development conference in June to bring coaches and
students together to fix some of the problems in our organization. I could
go on and on but I hope you get the picture. I have made my choices right
now about what should take top priority. I do not have a position on the
time limits, but I do not think much of people who bring up this kind of
issue one month from the national tournament. This needed to happen long
ago when there was time to do something about it. I have back channeled
Michael Bryant and said that I would rather discuss with him in person. I
do not like to argue via the internet. From your CEDA President who is
trying her best to do all of the administrative work that has to be
finsihed so that a national tournament can occur. Anyone who has time
right now can write an amendment proposing different time limits for next
years tournament and the entire community can vote. If this had been done
this year I would have used the time limits requested by the community and
put them in the invitation. At this time there is no consensus to make the
change.
Religion: I already made a post about this but I will do so again. We are
very very lucky to have a host this year for the national tournament, and
ask Tuna how much work it has been to get someone to bid for next years
tournament. Our host from Wichita left the university to take another job
and the responsibility of hosting a national tournament fell into the hands
of Jeff Jarman during his first year as Director of Forensics. CEDA
nationals means so much to Jeff he did not hesitate to take on the national
tournament. At my request he has arranged for there to be a sunrise Easter
service on campus on Easter Sunday. This is written in your tournament
invitation. He has worked very hard to find enough class rooms so that I
won't have to turn any schools away. It would break my heart to tell
students who want to come that they cannot participate in the national
tournament. He has also worked very hard so that 1997 CEDA Nats will be a
great experience for students and coaches.
I must end the phone is ringing and I am now getting pleas for extensions
on CEDA Nats registration. By the way I want to thank all the coaches for
taking the time to do all of the paper work for the registration. It is a
time consuming task. Students you should thank your coaches as well. Pam
