Well, Big Dave,
I never said that Korcok was the only one opposing early release.
I just thought he made the best attempt at reasoning, whereas most of
the others were blindly expressing fear based off of little reasoning.
I coached NDT teams at three small schools over the past 15
years. Never had more than 3 or 4 active researchers. Because of the
time allowed us by a July 10 release, my teams were in elims at over
90% of these tournaments. If you asked any of the debaters I've ever
coached if they thought their workload would be reduced by a later
release, I fear they would've laughed in your face, no matter how
many scared coaches might stand behind you.
CEDA is not NDT, but the analogy does fit many of the concerns
being expressed by scared CEDA coaches. Few of them ever had to face
the mega-borgs of Wake Forest or Northwestern. Why not listen to real
world experiences to counter irrational fears and misapplied economic
models?
I coached NDT at Weber for the past seven years. Many of my
debaters weren't even able to arrive in Ogden until past Sept 15,
since school starts the last week in September. My debaters were able
to keep their summer jobs and still work on debate, because of the
alleviation of time compression. The current topic release date is
hurting your programs. Ask your own debaters.
No matter how you feel on this matter, I am troubled that you
seem to support the notion of not even discussing this at the CEDA
Business Meeting. Is this the type of democracy that CEDA prides
itself on? Would you please clarify why you think that irrational
fears expressed by four coaches should be enough of a justification
to deny the voices of the rest of CEDA?
