Committee Materials/Idea
After my recent foray into the tenure issue, I began to discuss the
issue with a couple of people backchannel, or at least got some
backchannels from them about the PR issue. Brief recap: Programs need
publicity to increase their value to universities. It helps both the
programs involvement, the overall interest in the activity as a
competition, and general campus benefit perception.
Not all programs so PR, but some are very good at it. I mention these
that come to mind only from my experience. SIU during the late
80s/early90s. I have seen press clipping files of that era right before
I was debating heavily and they seemed to get alot of press. UMKC is
currently one of the best publicized schools for my area (midwest). I
once saw a story on UMKCs success one of my first years at Missouri
Southern in my own CAMPUS paper. Wow, we didn't even get a story that
week! (although the paper was good to us). I'm sure that there are many
more stories both regional and national in scope.
My question then becomes is there any current CEDA resources packaged
for squad PR, or ideas for how to get in by other means (public forums,
etc...). It would also seem to me, that some sort of national media
campaign should be considered in light of what we hope to accomplish and
what we can do to bring up the image of collegiate debating and those who
do well at it. would benefit our alums as well as the future position of
debate in the resource wars. Maybe the planning for a World Debate
Summit is a springboard.
So both an institutional memory, plus an ongoing campaign of
systematically promoting debate might benefit all memebr schools as well
as individuals. I do not know if an existing committee will suffice,
because certainly the documents could be updated every two years or so to
stay current of contacts, techniques and generally making sure its useful
by constantly soliciting ideas from the body.
Call it the Publicity committee or something.
I havent found anything that suggests to me such a body or such a
document exist now. If so, what can we add to them? If not, does anyone
else think its a good idea?
Searching for a masters thesis, I would certainly support involvement
in the process. I.E., Ill volunteer. Because the subject area interests
me and I believe will benefit academic debate as a whole.
I would welcome comments.
