Re: your mail
Bill Balthrop has given some good advice. I would like to extend it.
I. Directors of Forensics need a special contract or letter of appointment
clearly specifying their duties
Directors of Forensics do a special job with special requirements as well
as meeting regular expectations at their colleges or universities.
Directors of Forensics should get the expectations for their job in a
contract or letter of appointment at hire.
l. If there is to be release time for directing, this should be specified.
(I believe strongly their should be release time)
2. How is directing to be counted in the service and teaching categories?
3. Scholarship should be of the same quality but perhaps less in quantity.
This should be specified. How will convention papers and debate research
count should be specified.
This contract or letter of appointment should be a negotiated deal at hire
between director of forensics and dept and relevant dean. It should be on
paper for when personnel change.Dept chairs with experience in forensics
should help create such documents as new directors frequently don't know
what should be in the document unless they have had a great mentor.
See Quail Roost document for some help with this
II. Directors of Forensics need a portfolio for promotion and tenure
Contents could include among other things:
#l Bibliographies prepared for debate
#2 Handouts prepared for debate and individual events
#3 Logs of time spent at tournaments coaching and judging
Logs of time spent coaching and giving constructive feedback at home
debate practice rounds ie practice rounds squad meetings etc.
#4 Samples of letters brochures efforts made in recruiting
#5 Samples of public debates demonstration on campus and in the community
Forensic participants letters from contact organizations
#6 Annual budget requests and justifications for same
#7 Mentoring time for assistants and high schools
Logs of time spent lecturing on topic how to demonstrations at high school
workshops etc. (ALWAYS GET A LETTER OF REFERENCE COMMENDATION FROM THOSE
YOU HELP IN THE COMMUNITY AT HIGH SCHOOLS ETC)
#8 Letters from alumni stating benefits of forensics program to themselves
#9 Newsletters to alumni public relations efforts articles in newspapers
generated by forensics program during the year
These sorts of things demonstrate special efforts time spent by directors
of forensics in teaching and service.
III. Directors of forensics will still need to publish
There are lots of outlets
Alta Conference every other year
Argumentation and Advocacy
The Forensic of PKD
Speaker and Gavel of DSRTKA
Southern Forensic Journal
National Forensic Journal
Contemporary Argumentation and Advocacy CEDA
etc. etc. etc.
