I think the exact date of "later" is pointless; the only point is that
it needs to be before mid-August, when most schools start the fall
semester. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the rez is
released on August 1 after the vote.
Also, three generalizations:
1. Debators tend to be more academically elite, and can do well in
school as a result.
2. The NCAA, NAIA, etc., does not consider shortening their season
(this includes pre-"season" ), as a matter of fact, the college football
season has lengthened in recent years.
3. Dedication is directly proportional with success. If debators and
their coaches want more free time, they'll take it and put less into
debate. However, their record will represent it. Let's not punish those
who want to bust their ass 11 months a year (like myself).
Here's a final point, and one I'm sure I'll get all kinds of response on
(the thread that would never die!! :)):
I'm sure that statistics show (though I haven't researched this yet)
that college students with NO extracurricular activities spend more time
on their studies than those who do participate. As a matter of fact, we
know how prolific "sinful" lifestyles are in college. There have been
many a time that I passed up a night at a bar or at a party because I
needed to cut the enormous stack of articles promulgating in my living
room. By mandating a shortening of the season, I propose that this
would create more opportunties for this type of living......
I know I might get some hateful replies, but I know this is true,
because I would......
