SHORTENING THE DEBATE SEASON

The summer meeting in Chicago ended with some very interesting work
have been completed. There will be project reports posted at the
CEDA web site soon.

ISSUE -

We discussed burnout by coaches and students. The season is simply
too long and we are losing some of our finest coaches and too many
horror stories about students ending elgibility with many semesters
of academic study remaining. We discussed the falsity of the "debate
career" without a professional debate league.

Rather than shortening the season per se, I am interested in some
feedback about instituting a rule which would limit participation at
the national tournament to teams composed of individuals who had not
debated in more than "x" CEDA sanctioned debate tournaments during
the competitive season including the national tournament in question.

What value for "x"? If any?

What tournaments might be excluded? Experimental format tournaments
might be excluded so experimentation is not deterred. Round Robins
might be excluded because they are not open invitationals. etc.?

THE ALTERNATIVE MIGHT BE shortening the season which could severely
impact tournaments schedules (Nonetheless, I would vote for a
schedule which begins after our currently scheduled tournament).
